ripgrep
Search the files under a directory for a regex, respecting .gitignore
Built by @BurntSushi on GitHub. This page was written by @iluxav from public sources, last updated for 15.2.0 (2026-07-15), and may lag behind new releases.
Maintain ripgrep? Claim itSearch code and text files recursively for a pattern from the terminal, skipping ignored, hidden and binary files by default.
What you can do with it
Limit a search to some file types or glob patterns, or exclude them.
Show context lines, search several patterns, count matches and highlight them in color, as with grep.
Use look-around and backreferences in patterns by switching to the PCRE2 engine.
Good to know
Needs a ripgrep build with PCRE2 support.
Search files in encodings other than UTF-8, such as UTF-16, latin-1 or Shift_JIS.
Good to know
Only UTF-16 is detected automatically; other encodings need `-E`.
Search inside compressed files such as gzip, xz, bzip2 or zstd archives of single files.
Good to know
Needs the matching decompression program installed.
Search files through a preprocessing command, for example to search the text of PDFs.
Get search results as JSON lines for editors and scripts.

Set default flags in a configuration file.
Turn file paths in the results into hyperlinks that open the file in your terminal or editor.
Good to know
Off by default; needs a terminal that supports hyperlinks.
Before you upgrade
Newest first`rg -vf file` with an empty `file` now matches every line.

Release binaries for powerpc64 are no longer built; build ripgrep from source on that platform.
Read the evidence
The `simd-accel` Cargo feature was removed; build without it.

`-A` and `-B` now only partly override `-C`: `rg -C1 -A2` now means `-B1 -A2` instead of `-A2`. Drop `-C` if you relied on the old behaviour.
The man page and shell completions are now produced with `rg --generate man` and `rg --generate complete-<shell>`; the asciidoc build dependency is gone.

Release history 7
Have ripgrep respect the git config files you point to with GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL and GIT_CONFIG_SYSTEM.
Details
ripgrep reads `GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL` and `GIT_CONFIG_SYSTEM`, traverses very large trees faster, and ships `aarch64-unknown-linux-musl` binaries.
15.2.0.
Seeded by @iluxav with Claude Code (canido)
Follow growing files with ripgrep and `tail -f` again.
Details
Fixes a regression from 15.0.0 that delayed output with `--line-buffered`; adds a hyperlink alias for the Cursor editor.
15.1.0.
Seeded by @iluxav with Claude Code (canido)
Search Jujutsu repositories with their ignore rules respected, as in git.
Details
Directories with `.jj` are treated as git repositories; gitignore rules from parent directories are applied correctly; `-r/--replace` works with `--json`; globs allow nested braces; a `highlight` color type and `italic` style.
15.0.0; Windows on aarch64 gets release binaries, powerpc64 no longer does.
Seeded by @iluxav with Claude Code (canido)
Rely on ripgrep reporting every match for regexes that could be missed before.
Details
Fixes a bug that could make some regexes miss matching lines, for example `(?i:e.x|ex)` not matching `e-x`; the `simd-accel` build feature is removed.
14.1.1.

Run ripgrep on 32-bit ARM Linux from the release binaries.
Details
Release binaries for `armv7-unknown-linux-gnueabihf`, `armv7-unknown-linux-musleabihf` and `armv7-unknown-linux-musleabi`; better fish completions; a fix for unbounded memory growth while walking directories.
14.1.0.
Seeded by @iluxav with Claude Code (canido)
Click a file path in the results to open it, with hyperlinks in supporting terminals.
Details
New `--hyperlink-format` (for example `default` or `vscode`), `--stop-on-nonmatch`, and `-d` as a short form of `--max-depth`; completions and the man page come from `rg --generate`. Groups 14.0.0 to 14.0.3.
Also: A rewritten regex engine and faster parallel directory traversal.
14.0.3; hyperlinks are opt-in and need a terminal that supports them. Binaries for Apple silicon.

Starting point
Search a whole directory tree for a pattern while skipping ignored, hidden and binary files.
Details
State as of 13.0.0: `rg PATTERN` searches recursively, honours `.gitignore`, `.ignore` and `.rgignore`, and skips hidden and binary files unless asked.
Prebuilt binaries, package managers, `cargo install ripgrep`.
